Elos AquaTest pH Freshwater Test Kit
The activity of the bio-filter inthe aquarium system can be divided in mineralization and nitrification.
The product of the mineralization process are ammoniaand organic acids. The next step of decomposition is the oxidation(nitrification) of ammoniaand ammoniumto Nitrite(NO2).
Nitritehas a toxic effect on fish because it oxidizes hemoglobinto methemoglobin.
While hemoglobinis responsible for the transport of oxygen, methemoglobinlacks this ability !
Nitrite concentrations higher than 0,05mg/Lt (ppm) of NO2 are not acceptablekeeping aquarium fishes.
For these reasons, the periodical analytical valuation of nitrite inthe aquarium water should be considered, specially during the aquariumset-up and, periodically, to avoid the activity loss ofthe bio-filter system.
