Aquarium Filtration Overview

Sometimes we forget that fish kept in an aquarium are confined to a very small quantity of water as compared to their natural habitats in the wild. In the wild, fish wastes are instantly diluted. But in an aquarium, waste products can quickly build up to toxic levels.

Aquarium Filtration

Biological aquarium filtration is the term for fostering ammonia-neutralizing bacteria growth. It is so important to the health of your aquarium that we should look at how this process works more closely.

Aquarium Filtration

Mechanical Aquarium Filtration

A good mechanical filter is one that traps enough solids to keep the water clear without plugging too often. The four most popular mechanical filtration media are sponges, paper cartridges, loose and bonded floss media which are reusable to different degrees. Clean paper cartridges have the smallest openings and clean bonded floss has the largest openings. Clean sponges and clean loose floss fall somewhere between.

Aquarium Filtration

Chemical Aquarium Filtration

Chemical filtration, in short, is the removal of dissolved wastes from aquarium water. Dissolved wastes exist in the water at a molecular level, and fall into two general categories, polar and nonpolar. The most common chemical filtration method involves filtering the water through gas activated carbon which works best on the nonpolar wastes (but also removes polar wastes).

Aquarium Filtration

Aquarium Ultraviolet Sterilizers

High intensity ultraviolet light destroys the DNA in living cells and can be an effective means to control living pathogens. The most effective UV light is the high energy UV(C) light roughly at the wavelength of 250 Angstroms. To be effective, UV Sterilization (UVS) must expose the pathogens to high enough light intensity for a long enough period of time.

Aquarium Product News

Aquarium Filter Media

Aquarium filter media is used in different stages of aquarium filtration. There are three main types of Aquarium filter media which coincide with the three stages of filtration. Most beginning aquarists are concerned with what is termed as Mechanical Filtration Simply stated mechanical filtration cleans that which the human eye can see, and oft times spoils the viewing enjoyment of our aquariums. It is important to note though that simply because an aquarium looks clean, does not mean that the water has adequate filtration. All three types of filtration are important to maintaining a well balanced Underwater Eco System.

Aquarium Filtration

The Importance of Air Pumps

The new aquarist has no trouble intuitively grasping the importance of filtration and heating for the home aquarium which, after all, effects the environment of the fish tank in easily seen and understood ways. Often air pumps are assumed to be merely decorative, and lumped together in the novice s mind with plastic plants and burbling treasure chests. But aquarium air pumps serve a vital function within the home aquarium, one every bit as important to the cleanliness of the environment and the fishes overall health as filtration and heating.

Aquarium Filtration
